This project has its origins in the life and work of theatre maker Jordi Möllering.
Jordi has always loved long distance cycling. At a certain point he decided to take a bicycle courier side job to make ends meet. He discovered that his two professions are closely linked and he has dreamt of combining them ever since.
In 2021 he cycled across Europe with letters from Hasselt (B), Leuven (B) and Valkenburg (NL) in the performance Bonnefooi. Guided by the motto "embrace the unknown" he let the letters decide his route. He discovered that the letters formed chains of connection between Europeans. He discovered that the letters brought magic into daily life. He found out that in no time at all, he was visiting unexpected places and people. This generated wonder, but also awkwardness or even hostile situations. After his journey, he worked with visual artist to create a postcard book about the encounters along the road.
He has had the dream of doing a long distance journey guided by letters ever since. He wants to use this journey to get to know the world and its inhabitants better. He wants to learn if we are really more alike than different. He wants to get inspired and make theatre about it when he gets home.
His theatre company De Eenzamen operates in the Belgian and Dutch provinces of Limburg and wishes to expand to the Euregion. They found a partner in Panda and Borderlines, when Jordi Möllering made a cinepoem with them. Together they formed a coalition of organisations and artists to make a Euregional offline social network: a cycle route connected by mailboxes. This route is the starting point of Möllering's journey and along the road he will write letters in which you can read his portrait of a (dis)connected world through letters.
